Visiting the Pío XI Glaciar, the largest in South America, with a surface area of 1,265 km². Unlike the rest of the glaciers in the Southern Ice Field, the Pio XI glacier has advanced a significant distance in recent decades.
· It is also possible to visit the Amalia Glacier, in the Bernardo O'Higgins National Park, home to penguins and a variety of sea birds. The glacier is 21 km long and has a surface area of 158 km2.
How to get to the Southern Ice Fields
The Ice Field is located in the Patagonian Andes, on the border between Argentina and Chile. It is 350 km in length from north to south and has a surface area of 16,800 km². The Pío XI and Amalia Glaciers are in this Ice Field.
