The origins of this lagoon are proglacial. It was formed by the retreat of the San Rafael glacier, at the northern end of the Northern Patagonian Ice Field. Today, it is an important tourist destination: several boats depart daily from Puerto Chacabuco and Puerto Montt towards the lagoon where you can take in the natural beauty of the glacier and see the ice break off it in great chunks.
