Puerto Chacabuco

Dawn with the movement of vessels setting sail searching for spectacular ice blocks, the charms of Laguna San Rafael or the other natural areas of the Aysén Region (XI) can be enjoyed by tourists as they pass by Puerto Chacabuco.

Puerto ChacabucoActive and flourishing, Puerto Chacabuco is the main terminal of ferries and arrival port for major vessels in the region. Most trips to Laguna San Rafael and other places within the area begin here, where nature offers rewarding thermal springs, generous forests, impressive glaciers and fjords, endless channels, superb lagoons and several islands full of marine life.

Besides being the starting point for the tours to the main natural attractions of the region, Puerto Chacabuco is the center of sea and port activities of Aysén, since it receives several major ships and ferries from offshore.

Its boom began in the decade of the sixties over the past century, when continuous erosions caused the reduction of Puerto Aysén draft (14 kms away), thus keeping major vessels from mooring. This gave rise to the development of Puerto Chacabuco that currently counts on a suitable hotel infrastructure, as well as excellent restaurants.

Additionally, the amazing lakes and lagoons, rivers and fjords of Puerto Chacabuco, are the ideal natural scenarios for sport fishing. Its ictiological variety, plenty of specimens and the incredible size of some of them are an authentic invitation to try luck in its waters.

Trouts, silver salmons, silversides, carps and tencas, among other species, are some of the “trophies” that sportsmen may obtain in Chacabuco, where fly fishing is the main activity.

At the same time, there are several trekking trails for trekking lovers. These trails where green prevails are mostly signaled and demand an extraordinary physical effort, leading to beautiful natural landscapes.

The weather is characterized by constant rains, humidity and low temperatures. Average temperature in Chacabuco fluctuates between 7 and 9 degrees Celsius. In terms of precipitations, they are constant and even, being the average 2,961 mm per year.

As reference, it can be said that during January the highest temperature is 18.1º C and the minimum is 10.5º C, while during July, temperatures experience a considerable variation, with a maximum temperature of 7.2º C and a minimum of 2.2º C.
